ChungHwa will use the Nokia system solution to initially provide fast internet access and interconnected LAN services in the south region of Taiwan, as part of ChungHwa's plan to provide 100 per cent national coverage of ADSL services.
Under this agreement, Nokia will deliver its Nokia D50 Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). The agreement also covers network terminals and roll-out services. The work entailed in this contract is expected to be completed by the end of September this year.
"This latest DSL agreement once again proves the cost effectiveness of the Nokia solution for residential and business users to achieve fast access to IP based services," said Mr. Peter Humphreys, Regional Director for Broadband Systems, Nokia Networks, Asia Pacific. "The easily scaleable Nokia DSL and IP access products enable operators and service providers, such as ChungHwa Telecom to turn the demand for data usage into a real business opportunity."
Demand in Taiwan for fast Internet services is growing at a tremendous pace, and Taiwan currently ranks as the world's third largest market for ADSL services.

Note to Editors:
ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line) is a higher-speed alternative to Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and analogue modems, utilizing the copper wiring that already connects each home. Besides higher bandwidth, ADSL has another advantage for consumers: a single twisted pair can carry both voice calls (using existing analogue lines) and high-speed digital data.
The Nokia D50 is a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) which provides broadband services over existing copper access lines. Operators can now provide customers with efficient, simultaneous broadband network access and traditional telephone services. In essence, the Nokia D50 makes connections faster and more reliable for both business and residential users. With its two-stage architecture, Nokia D50 is a cost-optimized solution based on ATM multiplexer technology and is suitable both for large central office and small outdoor cabinet installation.
