LUND, Sweden, June 13, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Precise Biometrics AB (publ), developer and provider of world leading and userfriendly biometric security solutions based on fingerprints, has won a public procurement contract within the National Swedish Prisons and Probation Administration (PPA). The PPA is now testing Precise Biometrics' fingerprint reader and associated software at a number of workstations in the headquarters in Norrkoping, Sweden. The procurement was carried out during the spring and is a phase in the work within the PPA to enhance IT security within the authority as a whole. One way of doing so is to replace or supplement current login routines, based on passwords, with biometric fingerprint identification and smart cards.
The PPA has several registers that require a higher level of security. Instead of using ID/passwords as it does today, the PPA is now investigating the possibility of moving to a system with fingerprints and smart cards.
"We see great advantages with fingerprintbased login. Partly to minimize the risk that unauthorized persons can gain access our systems and partly because we hope to reduce the administration concerning passwords and codes. Precise Biometrics' products proved best in meeting our rigorous demands for a secure and convenient solution," said Bjorn Linderoth, head of IT security at PPA.
Christer Bergman, CEO of Precise Biometrics commented: "It is particularly satisfying for us to be chosen by the PPA, with its very strict security requirements, in tough competition with four other industry colleagues. This is an excellent example of an environment where our solutions do themselves justice."
Precise Biometrics' solution consisted of the combined fingerprint and smart card reader, Precise 100 SC, and software from one of Precise Biometrics' partners. If the tests are successful, a broader implementation of the products could follow after the summer.
