Eurotel in the Czech Republic selects Nokia to supply its MMS Solution

Eurotel and Nokia have signed a Letter of Intent following Eurotel's decision to select the Nokia system for multimedia messaging (MMS) as its MMS solution, following MMS testing since May. This solution will allow users of MMS-capable phones to send messages combining text, images, graphics and sound in a single rich message directly to other MMS terminals, e-mail addresses, or to users of non-MMS mobile phones.

Under the agreement, Nokia will supply a complete end-to-end MMS solution, including the Nokia Multimedia Messaging Center (MMSC), the Nokia Terminal Gateway and extension of the Nokia Artuse WAP Gateway. In addition, Nokia will provide implementation and integration,

The Nokia Terminal Gateway allows users of non-MMS legacy phones to enjoy MMS as well. When multimedia messages are sent to legacy phones, their users receive an SMS notification directing them to a Web site where they can access their MMS message.

Eurotel is the only mobile operator in the Czech Republic to offer two cutting-edge technologies for mobile (wireless) data transfer. General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HSCSD) are available to both postpaid and prepaid customers. Eurotel has leading position in corporate market and its corporate customers exetensively use data services.

"Eurotel is committed to maintaining a leadership position in innovative technology," says Terrence Valeski, CEO of Eurotel. "With the new MMS we would like to bring our customers closer to the products and services that are taking us ever nearer to the next generation of mobile phone services. These developments will, in turn, lead to greater use of mobile phone services by customers”.

"We are very pleased to continue our long-standing relationship with Eurotel, one of the Czech Republic's leading operators," says Jukka Pietarinen, Managing Director, Nokia Networks Czech Republic. " We are committed to help make MMS a life-changing user experience for all of Eurotel's customers”.

Within the industry, Nokia has the longest and most extensive experience in MMS, having piloted commercial systems since the third quarter of 2001 and has delivered an MMS solution since December 2001.  Nokia's other MMS milestones include the world's first-ever MMS roaming and interconnection demonstrated in February 2002.
