MALMO, Sweden and IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 5, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Telelogic (Stockholm:TLOG), the leading global provider of solutions for advanced systems and software development, announced today that Telelogic's automated lifecycle management tools contributed to Raytheon Company's success in achieving top honors for its software development practices and procedures.
Raytheon Missile Systems achieved a Level 5 rating from the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). The Capability Maturity Model rating, the Institute's highest, means that Missile Systems has committed to producing better software through its use of process improvement tools, practices and procedures. In particular, a Level 5 rating recognizes maturity in defect prevention, technology change management and process change management.

Many of Raytheon's businesses use Telelogic DOORS(R), Synergy(TM) and Tau(R) to manage and support their lifecycle development process, from the gathering of requirements and the assignment of tasks, to modeling code and managing changes, code and configuration.

Missile Systems, part of Raytheon's Electronic Systems business, uses Telelogic Synergy for its change and configuration management needs, and DOORS for requirements management. Telelogic Synergy and DOORS are widely used by other Raytheon business units. Telelogic Synergy and DOORS are among the standard Raytheon tools for configuration management and requirements management. To a lesser degree, Telelogic Tau UML is used by Raytheon for its object oriented software design needs.
R. Arthur Lurvey, senior systems engineer in the Tucson, Ariz., facility, said their use of DOORS and Synergy were factors in achieving the coveted Level 5 rating. He said DOORS gave them the ability to control and track changes to requirements, and demonstrate complete coverage; while Synergy was used to manage and control changes to software, and manage approvals of change requests through the Change Review Board.
"We have a better-defined process for development," Lurvey explained. "We have a more dependable and repeatable process with fewer errors, and those errors are caught earlier."
In the design and manufacture of complex, high-tech missile systems, such as the Tomahawk missile used in the Gulf War and more recently in the Middle East, there is naturally no tolerance for error or sloppiness. "Reliability and safety are critical," Lurvey noted. "We can't have systems failing."
DOORS has proven to be particularly valuable as a way to gather and share information. In the past, when requirements were managed using word processing and spreadsheet programs, information was lost, disappeared or stagnated on individual computers.
"With the old methods, we didn't have the fine granularity we needed," Lurvey said. "With DOORS, we can do complete traceability analysis and impact analysis on changes coming down in later phases of the project."
Raytheon Missile Systems started using DOORS seven years ago.
Raytheon signed a three-year, global master agreement with Telelogic, which covers the entire company. The maintenance agreement covers more than 2,000 licenses for Telelogic Synergy (change and configuration management), Telelogic DOORS (requirements management) and Telelogic Tau UML Suite (software analysis and modeling). It is Telelogic's largest maintenance agreement in history.
