BROMMA, Sweden, Sept. 27, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- The IT integrator, Dimension (Stockholm:DMSN) (Other OTC:DMSNF), has received an order from the Swedish National Archive of Recorded Sound and Moving Images for a data storage solution for archival material and backup for existing systems. The order also includes technical services.
The archive is Sweden's national repository for recordings and moving images. Its collections consist of radio and television broadcasts, films, videos, records and CD's, and multimedia dating back to the first Swedish gramophone recording from 1899. The archive's goal is to eventually collect, preserve and make available Sweden's entire production of recorded sound and moving images.
"We are now trying to digitize our older archival material and are in need of a larger, more flexible archival system," said Sven Allerstrand, Director General of the Swedish National Archive of Recorded Sound and Moving Images. "Together with Dimension, we have devised a solution that we feel will suit us well."
The data storage solution will initially have a capacity of 4.5 terabytes that can easily be expanded. Dimension has assumed turnkey responsibility for everything from project management, migration of existing data and delivery inspections to training. Final delivery is scheduled for late autumn of this year. As part of the first stage, approximately 1,250 hours of past sound and image material will be added to the system.
"Our solution for the National Archive is a good example of how Dimension, as an integrator, can take on turnkey responsibility and create a custom-designed system," said Sven Uthorn, Dimension's Managing Director. "Dimension has been involved since the preliminary study and has been able to analyze existing systems and identify future requirements."
Technically, the solution is based on SAN technology (Storage Area Network). The main components include robotics and routers from ADIC, servers from Sun Microsystems and HP/Compaq, disk storage systems from Hitachi Data Systems, switches from Brocade, and software for backups and HSM (Hierarchical Storage Management) from Veritas.
