Skanska Secures Its Largest Power Plant Project in New York Valued at USD 243 Million, SEK 2.2 Billion

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Dec. 11, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Skanska (Other OTC:SKSBF) (Stockholm:SKAb) has been awarded a new power plant project, its largest to date in New York. The contract is valued at USD 243 million, or SEK 2.2 billion. The customer is the New York Power Authority (NYPA).

Work will begin in January 2003 and the contract will be included in order bookings in the first quarter of 2003.

Skanska has received power plant projects in New York totaling USD 892 million, about SEK 8 billion. The new assignment is Skanska's eleventh power plant contract in New York since 2000 and the third for NYPA. Additionally, it brings the number of gas turbine generator installations statewide to a total of 31. The combined capacity amounts to almost 2,000 MW, including this new project.

The new power station is being constructed adjacent to the NYPA's existing Poletti Generating Station in Astoria, Queens. The contract is for a dual-fuel plant comprising natural gas and jet-kero fuel turbine generators, a steam turbine generator and two heat-recovery steam generators. The new power plant will generate 500 MW.

Skanska USA Civil's units, Slattery Skanska and Gottlieb Skanska are responsible for all civil, structural, mechanical and electrical work. The 97,000-square-foot (9,000-square-meter) plant features acoustical metal siding and two 160-foot-high (50 meter) steel stacks. The facility also includes a 1,000,000-gallon (4.5-million-liter) water tank. Skanska USA Civil will also install the plant's extensive process piping and monitoring and control instrumentation and manage installation of the electrical systems.

The project will be completed in September 2004. The power station is scheduled to begin deliveries in February 2005.
