WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 5, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) --- The National Cherry Blossom Festival(R) (NCBF) celebrates again this year March 22-April 7. With must see events such as the daily Cultural Performances at the Jefferson Memorial, the 37th Annual Smithsonian Kite Festival, National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade(R), Sakura Matsuri Festival, Tall Ships and the Gala Dinner Cruise Aboard the Odyssey, this year's festival brings a full schedule of fun and entertainment for the entire family. The two-week festival combines both traditional NCBF events as well as brand new events for 2003.
NCBF remains a significant symbol of the gift of cherry blossom trees from the people of Japan to the people of the United States. The year 2003 marks a very special year in regards to Japan and U.S. relations. This year begins the 150th anniversary of Commodore Matthew Perry's arrival in Japan with his fleet, which launched the 150-year strong relationship between Japan and the United States. The events that take place during these two weeks continue to be a way to help celebrate and further strengthen the friendship and alliance between Japan and the United States.
The Tall Ships Celebrate Cherry Blossoms has expanded their fleet to include six ships this year. From 2 p.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekends, celebrate Washington, D.C.'s maritime past by touring tall ships including the HMS Bounty and Kalmar Nyckel.
The daily Cultural Performances at the Jefferson Memorial, sponsored by Target Stores, have become a key feature of NCBF and are back again this year. More than 30 guest performers and performance groups will entertain audiences at the Tidal Basin. From noon-2 p.m. enjoy performances featuring music, dance, song and martial arts demonstrations in addition to hands-on arts and crafts activities.
There are several new art exhibits that celebrate the beauty of the cherry blossoms this year. Exhibits include: "Nature in Art: Beautiful Cherry Blossoms A Celebration of 150 Years of U.S. -- Japan Friendship," "Washi Art at Staff Association Art Gallery," and "Textures of Influence: Twentieth Century Japanese Prints in Collection of the University of Maryland." Admission to these beautiful displays is free.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival (R) has become a tradition in the lives of many people and something that the citizens of Washington, D.C and the entire nation look forward to sharing year after year.
