MALMO, Sweden, June 26, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Teleca has developed a solution for Portuguese mobile operator Optimus that makes it possible to modify the look and feel of customers' phones quickly and easily. Optimus can thereby adapt the phones so that customers always have direct access from the phones' main menu screens to new multimedia services as soon as they are launched.
Optimus recently launched Optimus Zone, a new multimedia portal for its customers that offers information and entertainment services based on a combination of video, images, sound and text. The success of the portal depends to a large extent on the look and feel of the user interface and how easy it is to access.
Teleca's solution makes it possible for the operator to customise the mobile phones graphical interface, in order to simplify access to multimedia services. The solution also enables the operator to easily update customers' phones to reflect new developed services. Optimus is one of the first operators in the world to launch services using such a system.
The solution is based on a small native application being installed in phones running the Symbian operating system. The application expands the phone's main menu and adds a so-called local portal for direct access to the services. The phone screen displays the same graphical interface as the one used on the Optimus Zone portal, which means that phone users do not have to deal with complicated technical configurations or addresses. Users can even personalise the menu layout of the interface to suit themselves.
Today, Optimus preinstalls the application in new Symbian-based phones. Customers who already have a Symbian-based phone can easily download and install the application via the phone's browser.
"This is further proof of Optimus's prominent role in the Portuguese market," said Miguel Almeida, Optimus's Marketing and Sales Director. "We want to provide the best products to our customers, and we know how we'll achieve this. We must offer simple, user-friendly and intuitive products like Optimus Zone. We want to do something different and completely new, and in Teleca we've found the right partner to meet this challenge."
"We were very pleased to take on the challenging task of launching an innovative solution with a very short lead time that will increase the use of the Optimus Zone services. The finished solution is pioneering because it is the first time that operators are able to add their own services to phone menus," said Roger Carlhammar, Senior Vice President of Teleca International Operations. "We look forward to continuing our long-term collaboration with Optimus on multimedia services and we intend to repeat this success in other European countries."
