ASM Receives Multiple Product Order from a Major Packaging Company

Bilthoven, The Netherlands, October 16, 2003 --- ASM International N.V. (Nasdaq: ASMI and Euronext Amsterdam: ASM) today announced that its 54%-owned subsidiary, ASM Pacific Technology, Ltd. (Hong Kong Exchanges: 0522) has received an initial order for 40 sets of the Eagle 60 gold wire bonder from Hong Kong's largest IC packaging company, a leader in advanced packaging technology.  The wire bonders are scheduled for immediate delivery.  The order also included an ASM AD900 flip chip bonder.
Patrick Lam, Managing Director of ASM Pacific Technology, Ltd. (ASMPT), commented, "Our Eagle 60 gold wire bonder was selected for its fine pitch and processing capabilities and for ASM's technical services in the area of packaging development support."
He continued, "ASM is especially pleased to be selected as the supplier of wire bonders for this major company's future expansions, and to extend the range of ASM products currently supplied to them for their high-performance packaging portfolio."
Launched in 2002, the Eagle 60 gold wire bonder is the industry's first production machine capable of 35-micron fine pitch bonding.  It also offers 20 percent higher productivity than its predecessor model.  The precision, high-speed, AD900 flip-chip  bonder for IC applications extends ASM's leadership in the chip attachment arena.
Mr. Lam added, "ASM has consistently added new customers, both IDMs and packaging companies, and gained market share with each generation of new gold wire bonders since introduction in 1998.  Our market penetration, particularly with die and wire bonders, has made ASM the leader in the global semiconductor assembly equipment market since 2002."
ASM's Eagle 60 gold wire bonder recently was named winner of the 2003 Advanced Packaging Magazine Award in the wire bonder category.
