The 10th of August is the third novel in what could be called a "reverse trilogy" chronicling Augie's life. Frey takes readers back to 1919 for a mystery in Jackson Junction following the Black Sox Scandal.
The action begins when a hired killer from New York and two Chicago gamblers carrying black satchels arrive in Jackson Junction. In a dream, Augie learns that there is 10,000 dollars in the satchels. He seeks help from his cousin Willie and friends Piggy and Ruthie from a kids' club and sets out to track down those satchels. However, Pig Reardon, division police captain for the Michigan Central Railroad, and two local crime reporters also have their eyes on those satchels.
When the kids' club is discovered, they are forced to relocate to an abandoned underground railroad tunnel. There, Augie and the gang meet a mysterious inhabitant that later plays a crucial role in Augie's life. As if there weren't already enough obstacles, Dottie Mae, Augie's nemesis, and her mother, Mrs. Reardon, cause some massive headaches for the gang. However, Augie will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of this mystery and reinstate his father's love of baseball, lost after the World Series scandal.
An exciting conclusion to the popular series, The 10th of August is a fun adventure that proves perseverance and intelligence can get a young boy through just about anything.
Frey cranked out this endearing trilogy in just two years. The first two, August in Paradise and August and Beyond, deal with different, but still adventurous times of Augie's life and were also published through 1stBooks. Frey says he will miss Augie, but he must get back to his other hobby: model trains.
