Actions and Phrases that Often Amuse People -- Author Presents Hilarious Sayings and Inane Actions in New Book

DETROIT, December 10, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- There are an infinite number of expressions, sayings and actions that baffle others. In her new book, Why People Say and Do These Things (now available through 1stBooks), author Beatrice Scott lists hundreds of mannerisms, frequently used words and phrases that people use every day.

With short blurbs that will have readers nodding their heads and thinking, "Yep, that's true," Why People Say and Do These Things compiles many of the commonly heard excuses, promises, doublespeak and actions that surprise and amuse everyday people.

For example, the "Sound Familiar" chapter outlines an annoying phenomenon that many can relate to:

"You always have a hard time talking to a "live person" when calling a company. A recording is in use, what you need is toward the end, or last on list. "If you want...... press (1), if you want ****** press (2), if you want ****** press (3) and on and on! "What you need is press (5) or (6) for customer service! Please hold, all of our lines are currently busy. After a five-minute wait, may I help you? "I'm sorry our department doesn't handle that particular problem, you must call (***) 555-0000. Another five minute wait: "your call is important to us, please continue to hold."

Beatrice also includes short and ironic bits of humor: "We're here for you 24 hours a day, just call whenever we are needed. 'Ring, ring, ring, ring, ring, ring, ring: I'm sorry; but the party you are trying to reach is unavailable, please try again later!'"

Beatrice writes, "...it was an adventure to capture the mixture of action, different forms of communication and the humor shown in a variety of historic, 'They Did That and Then Some!'" moments.

Beatrice is retired after 31 years as an employee with the State of Michigan. She graduated from high school in Los Angeles and attended college in California. A lifetime of interacting with people gave her the insight to write this book. She and her husband, Lovell, have three children and five grand children.
