AboveNet Launches Metro-IP and Metro-Express Services for the U.K. Market with Adva Optical Networking

MUNICH, Germany, May 12, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Managed services deliver up to 1 Gigabit of internet bandwidth and single transparent wavelengths directly to corporate customer premise sites with ADVA's FSP 500.

ADVA Optical Networking today announced AboveNet as a new carrier customer win in the United Kingdom and expansion of a business relationship that began with a joint customer installation in the U.S. in 2003. AboveNet is now teaming its Global IP backbone and extensive metropolitan dark fiber network with ADVA's Fiber Service Platform (FSP) 500 system to deliver value-added services to corporate customers in the United Kingdom.

The new Metro-IP service from AboveNet is a highly scalable, dedicated connection to the Internet that enables the delivery of large-scale bandwidth directly to a corporate customer's premises. Delivered as a managed service, Metro-IP allows businesses previously restricted by legacy telco networks to deploy state of the art IP connections that scale exponentially and on demand. The Metro-Express service is a point-to-point, dedicated single wavelength service that enables the delivery of numerous protocols, including Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, STM-1/-4/-16, and Fibre Channel, to interconnect corporate customer premise sites. Both services provide a fully-managed solution and are available at a fixed monthly fee for customers who do not have the in-house skills, equipment, or desire to light and manage a metro network themselves. Metro-IP and Metro-Express are enabled by ADVA's FSP 500, a managed fiber access solution specifically designed for customers who require the most cost-effective system for delivering data, storage, and voice applications.

"We chose ADVA for a number of reasons. Its proven platform and unquestionable ease of deployment, matched with its strong, reliable reputation within the metro arena, made this a compelling partner for this UK service offering," said Nick Platt, Product Development Manager for AboveNet UK.

"We are pleased to expand our relationship with AboveNet into the United Kingdom," commented Brian P. McCann, Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer. "The new Metro-IP and Metro-Express services complement ADVA's strategy of leveraging our segmented product portfolio to increase the availability of data services to a greater number of enterprise end users - whether over WDM technology, existing SDH/SONET networks, or native Ethernet."

ADVA's FSP 500 supports managed circuits and provides fiber extension for protocols including STM-1, STM-4, Fibre Channel, and 10/100 and Gigabit Ethernet, and at speeds ranging from 10Mbit/s to 2.5Gbit/s. Newly-released features include an 8-channel Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) module and a Single Fiber Working (SFW) solution. The system's flexibility and low entry costs provide an attractive value proposition for enterprises seeking short-haul data services.
