Kesko Food's and ICA's Baltic joint venture approved by EU competition authorities


The parties signed an agreement about setting up a 50/50 joint venture in June 2004.
 
The strengths of Kesko Food and ICA in the Baltic countries complement each other. Kesko Food's strongest market area is Estonia, where the company holds the leading market position. ICA has strongest presence in Latvia. At present the parties operate a total of about 160 food stores under hypermarket, supermarket and discounter concepts, as well as logistics centres.
 
Kesko Food currently operates six Citymarkets in Estonia and it owns Säästumarket, Estonia's biggest discounter chain, which includes 45 stores. In addition, Kesko Food has a SuperNetto cash-and-carry outlet and a logistics centre in Tallinn. In Latvia, the company has five Citymarkets and over 20 SuperNetto discount stores. The total number of Kesko Food personnel in Estonia and Latvia is about 2,700.
 
ICA operates six RIMI supermarkets and one hypermarket in Estonia. In Latvia, the company has 35 RIMI supermarkets and five RIMI hypermarkets, as well as a logistics centre in Riga. In Lithuania, ICA has 30 supermarkets and three hypermarkets, most of which operate under the RIMI brand. In addition, the company has a logistics centre in Vilnius. The total number of personnel in the Baltic countries is about 5,600.
