As reported in The Economist: the "ring tone" industry business generated $3.5 billion globally in 2003 (nearly 10% of the overall worldwide music market), up forty percent from the year before. Industry experts projected 2004 figures will exceed $4 billion. According to the ARC Group, a UK-based research firm, sales of ring tones will reach $5.2 billion by 2008.
Currently the International ringtone industry is far greater than in the United States and Canada. This marks one of the few instances where Europe and Asia have embraced new technology earlier than North America. However some sources project that the U.S. market will grow from approximately $70 million in 2003, to $300 million in 2004, making the United States the fastest growing market in the world for ring tones. By 2009, the United States market will approach $900 million, according to the Zelos Group.
IDS is concentrating on International growth markets, with significant Web-based potential, and www.ringtoneport.com is the first of several planned acquisitions.
