Noah's Wish Animal Rescue Efforts in Slidell to End November 15; Over 1,876 Animals Saved During Hurricane Katrina


SLIDELL, La., Nov. 8, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Noah's Wish today announced that the organization is in the final stages of its post-Hurricane Katrina animal-rescue efforts in Slidell, LA and hopes to have all pets placed in foster care or adopted by November 15. Noah's Wish has been working with Slidell Animal Control since August 31 to rescue and shelter animals in the aftermath of the storm. To date, Noah's Wish and Slidell Animal Control have cared for over 1,876 animals at the temporary animal shelter which was set up days after the hurricane devastated the city.

Owners looking for lost pets are asked to come to the temporary animal shelter located at 1325 Bayou Lane in Slidell. Over 416 pets remain at the shelter in Slidell and those not claimed by November 15 will be placed into foster care.

"We have been in Slidell for over 10 weeks and we will make sure that every animal is reunited with their owners or placed into a new home," said Terri Crisp, Founder and Director of Noah's Wish. "Absolutely no animal rescued from this disaster will be euthanized."

The following are the most updated statistics pertaining to Noah's Wish Hurricane Katrina rescue:


 --  Noah's Wish has cared for more than 1,800 animals at the
     temporary facility. These include over 900 dogs, 800 cats, 12
     birds, 12 rabbits, 8 chickens, 7 ducks, 3 each of geese, lizards,
     squirrels and snakes, 2 each of horses, mice, and pot belly pigs,
     and finally a pea hen, flying squirrel, emu, scorpion, tarantula,
     ferret, fish and a rat.

 --  488 pets have been reunited with owners.

 --  349 pets have been adopted. (These were animals in the Slidell
     Animal Control shelter before the storm and animals that have
     been surrendered.)

 --  467 pets are in foster care (Some have been placed in foster care
     at the request of owners who were displaced; others for medical
     and behavioral reasons.)

 --  Animals being boarded at local veterinary facilities = 73

 --  Total number of volunteers who have traveled from around the
     United States and Canada to donate their time to assist in the
     rescue and recovery efforts = 954. Volunteers traveled from every
     state in the country to assist except Hawaii, Idaho Iowa, and
     North and South Dakota.

 --  Number of animals at the Slidell Animal Control facility = 41

 --  Number of animals given food in the community on average per day
     = 3,751

 --  Animals that have died (Due to illness or injury. Most medical
     conditions were pre-existing (i.e.: cancer or heart problems) =
     42

 --  Animals euthanized due to behavioral problems = 1
