Swiss Scientists Use Approach Similar to Universal Detection Technology's for Anthrax Detection

New Test to Target a Molecule Unique to Anthrax

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Recently, Swiss scientists claimed they have found a fast and simple way to test for deadly anthrax. The test targets a molecule unique to anthrax, which is found on its surface, to give a result in minutes rather than days or hours. The work has been conducted by a team at Bern University.

Universal Detection Technology's (www.udetection.com) (OTCBB:UDTT) line of bacterial spore detectors, BSM-2000, used for detection of anthrax uses a similar logic for detecting the deadly spores. Based on a technology that the Company has licensed from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, UDTT has developed a real time anthrax detector that is able to detect abnormal rises in the levels of bacterial spores in as low as 15 minutes. Instead of looking for the DNA of the anthrax bacteria, which is both costly and time-consuming, BSM-2000 detects the presence and concentration of a molecule specific to bacterial spores, called Dipicolinic Acid (DPA).

"The approach used by the scientists at Bern University is similar to the JPL technology used in BSM-2000 in a sense that both methods focus on a shortcut to detecting anthrax. Instead of looking directly and specifically for the anthrax spores, these technologies look for markers, thus decreasing costs and the time associated with detection," said Jacques Tizabi, UDTT's chairman and CEO. "We hope to witness more acceptance and application of unique breakthroughs such as BSM-2000. Given the cost savings and the efficiency, there is a lot that can be gained through utilization of such systems," he added.

About Universal Detection Technology

Universal Detection Technology is a developer of monitoring technologies, including bio-terrorism detection devices. The Company on its own and with development partners is positioned it to capitalize on opportunities related to homeland security. For example, the Company, in cooperation with NASA has developed a bio-terror 'smoke' detector that detects certain bio hazard substances.
