Skelly Announces Candidacy for 7th Congressional District

HOUSTON, Dec. 18, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Michael Skelly, a successful renewable energy entrepreneur, announces he is filing to run for United States Congress. Skelly will represent the 7th Congressional District by bringing a new energy to Congress.

"The 7th District is one of the best educated and hardest working in America. It's time the citizens of this District had a representative who reflects that," Skelly said. "I will bring new energy to Washington and work to turn things around and get this country back on track."

Skelly and his family came from Ireland on the S.S. America when he was 2 years old with only $200. They believed that anyone could be successful if they worked hard, played by the rules and got a good education. Skelly honored his family values and studied hard, went to college and got a business degree from Harvard. He said he is running for Congress because he wants to make sure everyone has an opportunity to succeed in life.

Skelly built a wind energy company from the ground up, turning a two-man operation into a multi-billion dollar business. He plans to use the lessons he has learned in business in Washington to work with both parties to solve the tough challenges facing our country.

"When it comes to the change we need in our nation, the current war in Iraq tops the list. While the war was being poorly managed, John Culberson was signing off on a blank check with no accountability. That's no way to run a foreign policy, a business, or a family budget. It's time to bring things to a close in Iraq and start looking at responsible ways to bring our troops home," Skelly said.

"We have a choice to make. We can once again send a career politician to Washington who's never met a problem he couldn't make worse. Or we can send an entrepreneur with a record of getting things done and solving problems," he said.

Skelly's history of public service extends back to his days as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Central America. He currently serves on Mayor Bill White's Green Building Advisory Committee and is a longtime member of the board of the American Wind Energy Association. He attended the University of Notre Dame and Harvard Business School. Skelly and his wife of 16 years, Anne, have three children, ages 15, 13 and 11.
