RESTON, Va., Sept. 17, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has named Daniel P. Leaf vice president of strategic initiatives at its Mission Systems sector, reporting to Philip A. Teel, corporate vice president and president of Mission Systems.

In this new role, Leaf will work closely with business development, planning, division and campaign leaders to identify and promote Northrop Grumman's competitive advantages.
"Dan's strong knowledge of requirements and operations -- coupled with his NATO and air and land combat experience -- will add significantly to Northrop Grumman Mission Systems' understanding of our Air Force and joint customers," Teel said. "As the intensity of competitions for new programs grows, Dan's expertise and background will not only help us better respond to customer needs but also be instrumental in expanding awareness of the full scope of Mission Systems' C4ISR capabilities."
Leaf joined Northrop Grumman after serving more than 30 years in the U.S. Air Force. He most recently was deputy commander of the U.S. Pacific Command at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii, retiring as a lieutenant general earlier this year. Previously, Leaf served as vice commander of Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., and as the Air Force director of Operational Requirements at the Pentagon, where he directed Air Force requirements for air, space, weapons and C4ISR.
During his Air Force career, Leaf also commanded joint operations at the squadron, group and wing levels. He is a command pilot with more than 3,600 flight hours, including combat missions in operations Allied Force, Joint Forge, Northern Watch and Southern Watch. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Leaf directed the air component coordination element at U.S. Central Command's Land Component headquarters in Kuwait.
Leaf earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also an honor graduate of the U. S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., earning a master's degree in military art and science.
