Announcement No. 25-2008
10 October 2008
Amagerbanken's liquidity
On 18 September 2008 Amagerbanken announced a statement on the Bank's present
situation. About the Bank's liquidity the following was among other things
stated: “The Bank's liquidity is stable and still satisfactory. The terms of the
Bank's funding are characterized by the same difficult global market conditions
which are also valid for other banks.”
In the statement the Bank pointed out that expectations for the future involved
a higher level of uncertainty than normal due to the current market conditions.
Due to the significant aggravated conditions in the global finance sector in the
next days and particularly at the end of the closing of the month and the
quarter at 30 September 2008 the liquidity situation was generally worsened,
also including Amagerbanken. Thus for a period the Bank did not comply with
section 152 in the Danish Financial Business Act, which according to the law the
Bank had to remedy.
In order to generate a stable funding situation in the short money market on 3
October 2008 the Bank obtained short-term credit facilities in the Danish
central bank, after which the section 152 situation ceased.
After the announcement on 5 October 2008 of the establishment of a
government-backed deposit guarantee scheme and with the Danish Parliament's
adpotion of the guarantee scheme today, the basis for a normalization of the
funding situation in the banking sector has been established. On 6 October 2008
Amagerbanken announced that the Bank joined the guarantee scheme.
At the end of the week Amagerbanken noted that the adoption of the guarantee
scheme seems to have improved the Danish money market and the liquidity
situation for Amagerbanken.
Yours faithfully,
