Blue Coat Enhances Reporter to Provide Role-Based Visibility Into Web Activity

Reporting Platform Provides Customizable Dashboard for Interactive Role-Based View Into Web Activity

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - May 11, 2009) - Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: BCSI), the technology leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced immediate availability of Blue Coat Reporter 9.0 to provide enterprises with customizable role-based visibility into Web-related user activity. Reporter is a flexible role-based intuitive reporting tool that enables businesses to collect, correlate and analyze Web activity that is managed and logged by Blue Coat® ProxySG® and ProxyAV™ appliances, Blue Coat WebFilter and Blue Coat ProxyClient® mobile software.

To provide real-time visibility into Web-related user activity, Reporter can be configured to continuously upload logs. Reporter highlights Web activity information through a combination of common, pre-defined reports as well as easily customizable reports that enable administrators to view captured user behavior, security and operational information. With these reports, businesses can track malware and other spyware, traffic profiles, sessions, users and authentication, Web content and technical profiles.

"As business has come to rely upon the Web, understanding where and how people are using the Internet is critical to ensuring policy compliance and effective use of corporate resources," said Carrie Oakes, vice president of product management at Blue Coat Systems. "With real-time visibility into Web-related user activity and flexible, customized reports, the Reporter platform is a powerful tool that helps enterprises understand Web usage patterns and more tightly align network investments with business requirements."

Role-Based Reports Enable Multiple Views into Web Activity

Reporter enables network, security and human resources administrators to create customizable dashboards that provide at-a-glance, role-based overviews of user activity while its intuitive drilldown navigation simplifies access to deeper details, such as Web usage patterns by access attempts, access by category or time, blocked sites or many other metrics. More than 50 concurrent administrators can utilize Reporter simultaneously, with each dashboard instance providing a unique view of usage behavior, security and operations. All administrators are authenticated through the local network directory service, simplifying the process of generating reports, analyzing potential security risks and policy violations and understanding employee use activities.

Customizable Dashboard Provides Fast and Easy Access to Relevant Information

The flexibility of the Reporter platform provides enterprise administrators with multiple views into Web activity and the ability to customize dashboards for fast and easy access to the information that is most relevant to their areas of responsibility. This customizable dashboard speeds the decision making process by providing an at-a-glance view of relevant information.

With Reporter, security administrators can evaluate risks and track potentially dangerous activity to quickly identify users that have been infected with malicious content and spyware. Network administrators can track user and enterprise Web activity on a per-user or geographical basis to better understand the organization's networking habits and needs. For a human resources administrator, Reporter can track where and when users are going to the Internet.

A Use Case: Request for More Bandwidth to Improve Application Performance

For example, with the Blue Coat Reporter platform, a network manager that is receiving complaints about slow application performance could quickly and easily gather the information to determine if there is need for additional bandwidth. By generating a report on Web usage by category, the IT manager could see which categories dominate Web activity. If, for instance, streaming media leads Web activity in any given time period, the IT manager could simply update corporate IT use policies to block or limit that traffic and enforce those with the Blue Coat ProxySG appliance rather than purchasing incremental bandwidth.

If the Web usage by category report is consistently run to determine how traffic types are impacting application performance, the network manager can easily customize the dashboard to make that information immediately available upon login. With this immediate visibility into Web activity, the network manager can proactively preempt performance issues before they impact network users.

Availability

Reporter 9.0 is now available in three versions. The Standard version supports 50 million log lines. The Enterprise version supports 2.5 billion log lines and the Premium version supports more than 10 billion log lines.
