The longstanding Western accounts of anxiety as either essential to humanity (psychology) or as a congenital defect of people's nature as a result of inherited sin (Christian Theology) are here rejected as mistaken and misleading. The ultimate aim of all self-cultivation is discoverable only in the individual's transcendence of such self-misunderstandings. The ending of captivity by the false is the precondition for the disclosure of the true. Thus, escape from any negative entanglements rests wholly on the individual's coming to participate in an increasingly aware and attuned relation to Ultimacy. This unique possibility for human existence is one that psychology either denies or ignores and theological intellectualism only obscures.

About the Author
Professor Emeritus Allan W. Anderson received his Ph.D. in Philosophy and Comparative Religion from Columbia University with Union Theological Seminary. He has lectured on the Oracular at the University of California, San Diego and the University of Colorado during his twenty-five year tenure in the Philosophy and Religious Studies departments at San Diego State University. In 1970, he received an award for distinguished teaching from the State of California. He has published several articles on the I Ching and presented numerous papers at professional academic conferences on the nature of and interrelation between religion, spirituality and the oracular. He has also become well known for his series of eighteen dialogues with Krishnamurti available on DVD and transcribed in A Wholly Different Way of Living.
