Duckwall-ALCO Stores Reports September Sales Results


ABILENE, Ohio, Oct. 8, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Duckwall-ALCO Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq:DUCK) today announced that sales from continuing operations for the most recent fiscal five week period ending October 4, 2009, decreased 0.6% to $41.5 million compared to $41.7 million in the prior-year month. Same-store sales were down 0.4%.

Year-to-date sales increased 2.5% to $312.0 million compared to the prior-year $304.3 million, and same-store sales increased 0.3%.

Larry Zigerelli, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented: "September same-store sales performance was the strongest in four months. We are encouraged that we continued to deliver gross margin above expectation and that progress on SG&A cost reduction also remained ahead of goal.
