Technology Credit Union Donates $1,000 to the East Side Union High School District

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - October 16, 2009) - Technology Credit Union (Tech CU) is proud to announce that the East Side High School Educational Foundation in San Jose, California, is the deserving recipient of a $1,000 donation match for winning the credit union's Save 4 Your School Savings Challenge. The money will be used to pay for the foundation's after-school sports programs in the East Side Union High School District.

"The Save 4 Your School Savings Challenge is another example of Tech CU's firm commitment to education, to our children's future, and to the Silicon Valley community," said Kathleen Litman, vice president of marketing at Tech CU. "With the state of California facing major budget shortfalls, we know after-school programs such as music and sports are at risk of being cut. Our children need us to prevent that from happening."

Tech CU launched its Save 4 Your School Savings Challenge in May of 2009. The objective was to rally parents, students and teachers to come together and contribute money to a savings account, with proceeds earmarked to go toward their school, or to a particular educational program that may be in jeopardy. Tech CU offered a $1,000 donation match to the group that raised the most money in the challenge, which ended on September 30.

Parent-volunteers Clara Chin and Patty Carrillo accepted Tech CU's donation on behalf of the East Side High School Educational Foundation.

"We opened this account because our district ran into budget problems last year," Chin said. "Because sports are part of after-school programs, our district considered them as a possible elimination in order to save money. As parents, we couldn't let that happen to our students. We decided we needed to do something."

The women say had after-school sports been cut, it would have directly affected 6,300 student athletes in the district.

"We know the effects of those cuts will go beyond the thousands of student athletes," said Litman. "Programs such as music and sports are paramount to our children's development -- they help teach our children about leadership, good sportsmanship, hard work and perseverance. That's why we're thrilled to be able to raise funds to help our local schools, and to make sure our children grow up with the educational tools and resources they need."

Chin and Carrillo agree. They hope other organizations like Tech CU "step up to the plate" to help local schools.
