KANATA, ON--(Marketwire - April 12, 2010) - The ng Connect Program today announced that two members, QNX Software Systems and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris: ALU) (
QNX and Alcatel-Lucent were selected for their collaboration on the LTE Connected Car, a new concept vehicle that illustrates how 4G/Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband access technology and resulting ultra high-bandwidth connectivity can bring a wide range of new capabilities to the automobile. ng Connect Program members Alcatel-Lucent and QNX Software Systems -- along with Atlantic Records, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., chumby, Gamestreamer, Intamac and Kabillion -- worked together to create the world's most innovative integrated in-vehicle experience.
The LTE Connected Car creates an entirely new mobile communications platform by bringing together leading automotive makers, network operators, component suppliers, and content providers. Application developers and content providers from the program contributed to show how those industries can extend existing services to the LTE Connected Car, and how they can create a whole new class of vehicle-centric and travel-centric applications and services. These include remote maintenance (such as vehicle software and application upgrades), entertainment, safety and mechanical telematics, and enhanced navigation, including detailed traffic and weather information.
QNX Software Systems provided the software foundation for the LTE Connected Car, including the operating system, touchscreen user interfaces, media players for YouTube and Pandora, navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, multimedia playback, handsfree integration, games, an app store, and a virtual mechanic. All components are based on the QNX® CAR application platform.
For its part, Alcatel-Lucent provided LTE radio and patent-pending antennae technology that supports new advances in in-vehicle connectivity. The company's multi-screen video solution provides streaming video applications to four touchscreens simultaneously. Alcatel-Lucent's historic Bell Labs invented key standards for MiMo and OFDM that support today's smart antennae and emerging LTE networks.
Winners for this year's OCRI awards were selected by a committee from the Society of Collaborative Opportunities and Advancement of Professionals (SCOAP).
