BOISE, Idaho, May 25, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Alternate Energy Holdings, Inc. (OTCQB:AEHI) announced that last week, AEHI executives visited Mitsubishi Heavy Industry, LTD. in Kobe, Japan to discuss the benefits of the US-APWR for the Idaho nuclear site. The US-APWR at 1,700 MWe is the largest commercial nuclear plant on the market today, and most of the APWR technology is in a complete design and schedule for construction in Japan. The U.S. version is in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's design certification process that is scheduled for completion in 2012. The US-APWR is an advanced generation 3 plus design that is safer, more reliable and more efficient and involves producing less spent fuel.
"Discussions with Mitsubishi are part of an ongoing effort by AEHI to reinvestigate all current advanced reactor designs in the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission design certification process before we make a final decision later this year," said Don Gillispie, AEHI CEO.
MHI is one of the world's major suppliers of heavy equipment such as reactor vessels and steam generators to the commercial nuclear industry including new reactor vessels for AREVA, the French nuclear company, and replacement components for many operating U.S. nuclear plants.
"We were very impressed with capability of the MHI organization and quality of products that meet U.S. requirements. The US-APWR due to its many excellent features may very well be the best value in the U.S. market on a cost per KW installed bases. It is also encouraging to see that the Japanese government has recently agreed to form a new company to assist with exports of nuclear power technology which should help with more competitive international pricing and possible financing options for buyers. The construction time after the first few reactors are completed is predicted to be less than 42 months due to their modular design," said Gillispie.
