SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - September 30, 2010) - Opanga Networks, the industry's leading innovator of pragmatic video optimization solutions that efficiently pre-position high-quality content to any device, today announced the availability of a new white paper titled "Streaming Video and Wireless: A Fundamental Mismatch?" In the paper, Opanga's team explore the fundamental mismatch between the amount of spectrum available and the demand that streaming video places on that spectrum.
Opanga's new paper analyzes traditional solutions for mitigating the massive strain placed on operator networks from streaming video services, such as adaptive video compression, core network Quality of Service (QoS), network offload techniques and data capacity limits on consumers. The paper also introduces content pre-positioning as a compelling new component to complement these traditional solutions.
Content pre-positioning presents an innovative new approach for video delivery, transparently pre-positioning content in real time to a wireless device without causing the network congestion or degradation typical of other streaming video applications. As a result, consumers get a far superior playback experience that leverages the high quality video components and displays in today's smartphone and wireless devices. The video never freezes and since the content is pre-positioned in the device, consumers can enjoy their content without an active broadband connection.
"While we recognize that streaming video is currently the predominant distribution technology for mobile video, we feel strongly that streaming is not the only answer. Wireless operators are now recognizing that streaming is not a longer-term, viable business proposition simply due to lack of available spectrum," said Dave Gibbons, CEO and co-founder, Opanga Networks. "While streaming will most certainly be part of our wireless future, the industry needs to explore more scalable and sustainable technologies for the next evolution of wireless applications and services to augment streaming. We believe that content prepositioning is an essential technology in addition to 4G, network offload, adaptive rate streaming and QoS technologies."
Opanga's recently launched NetRover™ Mobile platform utilizes the content pre-positioning technique to help save operator's networks by utilizing surplus network capacity without significant CAPEX, and to provide consumers with a vastly superior mobile video experience.
The white paper is free and available for download here. Opanga will be also be discussing the white paper and showcasing its NetRover solutions at CTIA Enterprise & Applications on Oct. 5-8 at booth #755.
