The ALRT Health-e-Connect (HeC) System's platform provides a unique communication channel that allows test strip suppliers to have feedback and dialogue with patients to encourage patients' compliance to diabetes treatment plans and improve adherence. Adherence to prescribed treatment plans should improve health outcomes as was shown in a clinical trial where the ALRT HeC System was used by type 2 diabetes patients on insulin (see http://www.alrt.com/about/news/1).
The established resale market for unused test strips suggests that the quantities of test strips currently dispensed exceed usage by the intended consumers. If intended consumers continue to not adhere to prescribed treatment plans, the accurate measure of actual strips used will allow CMS to adopt a policy to reimburse refill only for strips that have been used instead of reimburse automatic refills of full prescriptions. The HeC System supports data uploads from blood sugar meters manufactured by Abbott Diabetes Care, Bayer Diabetes Care, LifeScan Inc. (a Johnson & Johnson Company) and Roche Diabetes Care.
The ALRT HeC System is not available for sale in the United States pending FDA 510(k) clearance. The Company submitted a 510(k) application to the FDA for the ALRT HeC System on July 23, 2010.
