SAN BRUNO, CA--(Marketwire - December 21, 2010) - Devicescape, the leader in Easy WiFi, today announced that MetroPCS Communications, Inc. will deploy Devicescape's Easy WiFi solution in support of its Android-based smartphones. Easy WiFi is integrated into the handsets to simply and transparently offload consumer data traffic to Devicescape's virtual Easy WiFi Network, reducing mobile network congestion and helping optimize network efficiencies.
Android-based smartphones continue to gain popularity among a growing number of consumers given the wide range of services and applications which are available. In turn, use of media-centric applications can drive increasing volumes of data over the mobile network -- particularly in urban areas or congested areas like airports. MetroPCS today offers unlimited talk, text and web services with its flat-rate, no annual contract service plans.
A custom version of Devicescape's Easy WiFi, called "MetroPCS Easy WiFi", is included in MetroPCS' Android smartphones -- starting with the LG Optimus M™ and Huawei Ascend™. The Devicescape technology is used to mitigate costs and reduce congestion through the diversion of data traffic onto the prolific Easy WiFi Network.
"The mobile experience has moved from voice and texting to video calls, augmented reality, constant check-ins, and photo sharing. We are only scratching the surface of the amount of data being sent over the network," said Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group. "Carriers need to employ multiple strategies when it comes to economically managing this traffic explosion. Offloading to WiFi as seen here with MetroPCS is one smart move."
"For several years now, Devicescape has been talking about how WiFi is a complementary technology to cellular. By pairing the two, service providers can deliver higher quality service and data intensive, rich media applications to their end customer: the consumer," said Dave Fraser, CEO of Devicescape. "We are honored that MetroPCS selected our Easy WiFi to help manage network traffic and optimize network performance."
Easy WiFi allows data offload at more than 125,000 public hotspots throughout the United States. No user configuration or interaction is required: Easy WiFi will simply run in the background and operate transparently. A companion mapping application is included to allow users to seek out Easy WiFi Network locations and the system can be extended to allow the user to add additional WiFi accounts, further improving the offload footprint.
