BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - February 22, 2011) - What procedure is better, eyelid surgery or minimally-invasive rejuvenation such as the popular liquid lift? Both have their pros and cons, according to Dr. Ioannis Glavas, Boston's Eyelid Specialist, but ultimately, it all depends on the patient.
"Generally speaking, eyelid surgery is the Gold Standard for both upper and lower lid lifts," Dr. Glavas said. "The surgeon can precisely fine tune the shape of the eyelid, and address related issues like extra skin, fine wrinkles, and droopy lids. It's also a permanent solution, with results lasting 15 years or longer."
Dr. Glavas points out there are always some disadvantages with surgery. "Surgical procedures always involve a certain amount of risk and require substantial recovery time. In the case of eyelid cosmetic surgery, that could be four days to two weeks, depending on several factors."
For these reasons, some people prefer to go with minimally-invasive procedures like Botox or other injectables. Although it is a temporary solution that allows for small degrees of correction, it eliminates the risks and downtime due to surgery.
"Patients can have the procedure done right in the office, and then continue on with their day," Dr. Glavas said. "Sometimes there is a small amount of bruising at the injection site, but this is easily covered with makeup."
In some cases, the procedure can also be reversed -- a fact that gives comfort, especially to first-time patients. However, Dr. Glavas points out that injectable procedures or "liquid lifts" don't work for all people.
"A person with too much excessive skin or prominent bags of the eyelids may not be a great candidate for injectables because the benefit may be so small it goes unnoticed," Glavas states. "On the other hand, a person with nice smooth looking skin who has moderate aging changes would benefit the most."
With the options now available Dr. Glavas stresses the importance of consulting with a experienced cosmetic surgeon, so the patient has the opportunity to compare all options. "Cosmetic surgeons are trained to look at all possibilities, and to advise the patient on the best course of action for them."
