HONG KONG--(Marketwire - March 29, 2011) - LEAP Studio and Chrysanthemum Consulting will offer a brand-new "Young Leaders of Tomorrow" summer program for high school students in Hong Kong in July 2011. The passionate teaching team of Ivy League graduates and students will help high school students develop self-awareness, a service mindset, and leadership skills to prepare themselves for their journey to college and beyond.
In this era of unprecedented demands on young people, the Program Creators of "Young Leaders of Tomorrow" have a refreshing "less is more" approach. A respected Humanities teacher from HKIS, Dr. Marty Schmidt, says, "This summer course has all the elements that students get excited about -- inspirational speakers, a simulation about a crucial contemporary issue affecting the lives of millions, and authentic project work with Hong Kong NGOs. Led by the innovative founders of LEAP and their Ivy League senior and junior facilitators, this program promises to strengthen student skills while engaging them with issues that really matter."
To deepen their self-awareness, students will create an Inner Leader Portfolio. The program creators see a strong linkage between Inner Leadership and college/life success. The governing question will be "what kind of person do I aspire to be, so I can be true to my essential nature, successful, and make a contribution to the world?"
To cultivate their service mindset and develop leadership skills, students will be accountable to complete strategic projects for partner NGOs, guided by seasoned business professionals. Partner NGOs such as Grameen Foundation and Dialogue in the Dark see the value of offering such a developmental opportunity for aspiring young leaders.
The leadership simulation will help students develop leadership skills in the context of real-world pressures. Simulation is a highly effective learning method, with a retention rate of 75%, vs. 5% for lecture and 40% for group discussions. Students will experience a simulation of the challenges microfinance leaders face in India. Pilots showed that students from grades 9 - 12 (Form 3-6) can relate to real-world business challenges, and had fun doing so.
After experiencing the two day pilot, Jason Yao, a grade 10 student from HKIS, said: "Before the simulation, I came in expecting a series of simulations that were interesting and thought-provoking, but not much else. I came out of that simulation wondering how could I apply what I'd learned to my day-to-day life, how to see situations from different perspectives, how to settle a disagreement with dialogue instead of edicts, and how I could use what I'd learned for the betterment of others."
