SKILLMAN, NJ--(Marketwire - Apr 27, 2011) - According to a recent survey of women ages 18 and older commissioned by the MONISTAT® Brand, the majority of women (59 percent) admit they put others' health and wellness above their own. In an effort to help make women's health a priority and cure the confusion around common women's health issues, the MONISTAT® Brand is partnering with National Women's Health Week(NWHW), a weeklong health observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health that brings together communities, businesses, government, health organizations, and other groups in an effort to promote women's health.
In honor of National Women's Checkup Day, the MONISTAT® Brand is hosting a live webcast with Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz1, a board-certified OB/GYN who practices in Beverly Hills, California to answer common women's health question. Women can email their questions in advance to nwhw@hunterpr.com and tune in live May 9 at 7:00 p.m. EST/ 4:00 p.m. PST at http://www.ustream.tv/monistat.
In addition to answering frequently asked questions, Dr. Lenz will also discuss the results from the MONISTAT® Brand survey that highlight women's lack of attention to and awareness around women's health issues:
- Annual Checkups Often Overlooked. Nearly half (42 percent) of women do not have regular general health checkups and 44 percent do not visit their gynecologist every year. Among women under 30 who don't see their gynecologist yearly, 50 percent don't think annual visits are necessary at their age.
- Women's Top Health Concerns. Women do not rank gynecological health among their top health concerns. Instead, women listed weight/diet/exercise (44 percent), heart health (32 percent), and blood pressure (30 percent) among their top three biggest health concerns.
- Questions About Women's Health. Approximately 1 in 3 women (34 percent) have questions about their gynecological health, but aren't sure which source of information to trust, and 32 percent of women are not proactively asking their gynecologist a single question about their health.
- Searching for Information Online. The majority of women (57 percent) in their twenties said they have questions about their gynecological health but aren't sure which sources to trust. While women over 30 head straight to the doctor, women under 30 are most likely to turn to an online medical source (45 percent) before a doctor, friend or family member.
- Confusion Around Common Women's Health Condition. Forty-three percent of women ages 18 and older mistakenly believe a yeast infection can only be cured by a doctor's prescription, and 39 percent of women incorrectly believe that treating the symptoms of a yeast infection is the same as curing it.
"Despite how common yeast infections are, it is surprising to me how much confusion exists around the treatment options for yeast infections," said Dr. Lenz. "If you know you have a yeast infection and you are in good health, MONISTAT®, an over-the-counter, antifungal vaginal yeast infection treatment, is a great treatment option because it both relieves symptoms and cures the infection, unlike symptom relief creams, such as Vagisil®2, that only temporarily relieve the symptoms rather than providing a cure. Furthermore, MONISTAT® was proven in a clinical study to begin relieving symptoms four times faster than the leading prescription3, so you can start feeling better faster. Prescription pills will eventually cure your yeast infection, but they won't provide immediate relief of your symptoms."
To help women better understand what gynecological health screenings they need, and remember what questions to ask during annual gynecologist visits, the MONISTAT® Brand has worked with Dr. Lenz to develop a downloadable screening chart and checklist of questions.

About the Survey
This MONISTAT® Survey was conducted by Wakefield Research among 503 nationally representative women aged 18 and older, using an email invitation and an online survey between March 15th and March 21st, 2011. Quotas were set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the total U.S. population of women aged 18 and older.
Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 4.37 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.
