The 2011/2012 criteria support the Stage 1 meaningful use measures required to qualify eligible providers and hospitals for funding under the ARRA Act.

The ARRA provides the health care industry with over $20 billion in stimulus expenditures for the development and adoption of health information technology (HIT). The largest allocation of funding — approximately $17 billion — is for incentive payments through the Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement systems to encourage providers and hospitals to implement EHR technology. As much as $48,400 is available to eligible professionals and up to $11 million for hospitals. Further, Medicare reimbursement payments will be reduced for providers that do not become meaningful users of EHR by October 2012.
