PITTSBURGH, July 12, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Scientists at Gateway Analytical will discuss current challenges and successes in trace evidence examination, present research findings on the detection of ignitable liquid residue (ILR) using hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and more at the 2011 Trace Evidence Symposium, Aug 8-11 in Kansas City, Mo.
Presented by Office of Justice Programs' National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Laboratory Division, this annual symposium brings together practitioners and researchers to enhance information sharing and promote collaboration among the trace evidence, law enforcement and legal communities. Highlights of Gateway Analytical's activities at the conference include:
Session: Debating the Merits of Trace Evidence Analysis and Interpretation
Aug. 9, 1:15 p.m.-3 p.m.
Panelists: David Exline, Senior Vice President, Gateway Analytical; Rock Harmon, Consultant; Maureen Bottrell, Federal Bureau of Investigation; and Michael Risinger
An opening panel, this session will examine current challenges, concerns and successes in trace evidence practice.
Poster Presentation: Hyperspectral Imaging as a Method of Detecting and Visualizing Ignitable Liquid Residues
Aug. 10, 12:15-3:00 p.m., Exhibit Hall
Presented by: Cara Plese, Forensic Scientist
This preliminary research investigates fluorescence HSI as a means to detect and visualize ILRs on both aged and fresh carpeting and clothing samples. HSI detects IRLs by visualizing the fluorescence of the dyes and additives which remain after the hydrocarbon component becomes undetectable by other analytical techniques.
Poster Presentation: Analysis of Trace Evidence Using a Combined Raman/LIBS Microscope System
Aug. 10, 12:15-3:00 p.m. Exhibit Hall
Presented by: David Exline, Senior Vice President
This presentation will address the use of a combined Raman/LIBS system for the analysis of single particles and large particle population samples to evaluate the benefits and limitations of such a technique in "real world" forensic applications.
In addition, the company will be sponsoring the American Association of Trace Evidence Examiners welcome reception, as well as exhibiting its trace evidence services at booth 3 throughout the conference's duration.
