EXFO Demonstrates Waveform Analysis and Bit-Error-Rate Measurement of DP-16-QAM Signal at a Record Symbol Rate of 66 GBd

In a Post-Deadline Paper to be Presented at ECOC in Geneva, Switzerland, EXFO Will Announce the Results of a Unique Experiment Where a DP-16-QAM Signal Was Characterized at a Record-Breaking 528 Gbit/s

QUEBEC CITY, Canada, Sept. 21, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- EXFO Inc. (Nasdaq:EXFO) (TSX:EXF) announced today that its PSO-200 Optical Modulation Analyzer has simultaneously measured the bit error rate (BER) of a DP-NRZ-16-QAM signal beyond the industry-required forward error correction (FEC) limit and demonstrated waveform measurements using industry-standard 'word length', all at an astounding 66 GBd rate.

The result of this demonstration marks an industry first on such high-speed 16-QAM signals. Furthermore, it clearly shows that the PSO-200 not only offers the most efficient solution for characterization of 100 Gbit/s signals, but is also the most flexible approach for characterization of signals beyond 100 Gbits/s—where both multilevel QAM and higher symbol rates will likely be used.

EXFO's PSO-200 Optical Modulation Analyzer is the only instrument on the market capable of providing distortion-free characterization of phase-modulated signals for transmission rates up to 100 GBd. In addition to supporting the OIF (Optical Internetworking Forum)-recommended DP-QPSK for 100 Gbit/s transmission, the PSO-200 supports modulation schemes and baud rates that could allow transmission of signals at over 1 Tbit/s.

"EXFO has been at the forefront of 100G testing by offering several 100G-focused transport and optical test solutions as early as 2009. The performance demonstrated here shows that EXFO is always looking ahead to offer innovative and future-proof solutions to its customers," said Étienne Gagnon, EXFO's Vice-President, Wireline Division and Corporate Marketing. "The PSO-200 Optical Modulation Analyzer, now more than ever, addresses the needs of system developers working on next-generation networking technologies by supporting today's and tomorrow's ever-increasing demand for bandwidth."

Details on this unique experiment carried out with the PSO-200 will be presented at the ECOC Post-Deadline Session at the Geneva Palexpo Conference Centre, starting at 2:30 pm, on Thursday, September 22, 2011 (Session Th.13.B.3).
