Construction Begins on EwingCole Designed Keller Army Community Hospital Addition

WEST POINT, N.Y., March 2, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- EwingCole, an award-winning architecture and engineering firm based in Philadelphia, has designed a new $34 million addition to the Keller Army Community Hospital Clinic at the United States Military Academy at West Point. The project is designed to achieve LEED Silver Certification and is expected to be completed by May of 2014.

"It was important to provide the West Point community with convenient medical care in an environment comparable to the very best private sector facilities," said John Capelli, AIA, principal of EwingCole's government practice. "Through a series of design charrettes with representatives of the US Army Corps and the hospital, we have created a project that enhances the outpatient experience with a modern entrance, lobby and a clear circulation path that allows access to daylight and views of the Academy."

The 51,000 square foot addition will become the home for optometry, ophthalmology, physical therapy, and orthopedics clinics, as well as provide TRICARE office space. The clinic design can respond over time to changes in the mix of examination rooms, patient needs and physician services without the need for renovation. This provides unmatched flexibility for the Army and its patient population. The project will be phased to allow the hospital to remain open during construction.

"This project will significantly expand our capability to execute better our mission of providing world-class health care," said Keller Army Community Hospital Clinic Commander Col. Beverly C. Land. "It will prove to be a benefit to our patients to have many of our services that are currently located in more than five other buildings, brought back to the hospital for efficient, one-stop medicine."

Named after World War I surgeon William L. Keller who served there in 1914, the hospital was dedicated in 1977, offering significant improvements in patient care at the time.

"As a West Point graduate, I'm proud to be able to oversee these critical improvements to the Keller Army Community Hospital Clinic," said New York District Commander John R. Boulé. "This new addition will help ensure the West Point military community – servicemen, servicewomen and their families – receive the best health care available."
