HILLSIDE, N.J., May 9, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- While everyone knows this Sunday, May 13th is Mother's Day, one furniture seller is creating a stir about another celebration: Tulip Day.
Tulip mania in one form or another has been around since the 1600s, but the recent petal uprising has generated a proliferation of festivals devoted solely to the tulip. The famed Canadian National Tulip Festival in Ottowa is celebrating their 60th year this week; while the Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Michigan has been running since 1929.
What has troubled Moshe Melamed, co-owner of LexingtonModern.com--a premier seller of mid-century modern classics--was that Eero Saarinen's Tulip table and chair series was being unjustly overlooked.
"The tulip is probably the most popular flower in the world for its simple design and fascinating history," said Melamed. "Saarinen must have known this, yet people seem stuck on the flower. There are dozens of poems, books and paintings devoted to the tulip. It's time to expand our notion of what Tulip Day is all about."
With this in mind, Melamed is encouraging his nearly 18,000 Facebook fans to contact the festival organizers with a simple message, "Encourage artists, poets and designers to exhibit at your festivals. Creative minded people from all backgrounds have something to say about this famed flower."
"Eero Saarinen turned a world dominated by four-legged tables and chairs and created an elegant series that rests itself solely on a pedestal or flower stem. People want to hear about modernist ideals that reach beyond square rationalism."
