WAYNE, Pa., Aug. 5, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Radnor Veterinary Hospital in Wayne, PA is raising awareness about summer veterinary emergencies. According to veterinarian Dr. Leonard Donato, one out of every three pets will require emergency care this year. Dr. Donato is sharing tips for reducing the risk of heat stroke, and car accident injuries. The vet also recommends that pet owners have the address and phone number ready for the nearest 24-hour emergency animal hospital.

"With the warmer weather, pets spend more time outside," said Dr. Donato. "This is one of the most common times for serious pet emergencies to occur. During the summer, we see an increase in heat stroke and car accident trauma."
With temperatures rising across Pennsylvania, the veterinary hospital is reporting an increase in heat stroke emergencies. Heat stroke symptoms include excessive panting, vomiting, dark or bright tongue and gums, and seizures.
"If you suspect that your pet is overheating, try to cool your pet off by wiping him down with a wet towel," said Dr. Donato. "You can also offer him cold ice cubes to lick. If your dog starts to convulse or have a seizure, immediately take him to an emergency veterinary hospital."
To prevent heat stroke, Dr. Donato recommends pet owners exercise their dogs in the early morning or evening, avoiding midday heat. If pets stay outside during the day, they should have plenty of water and a cool, shaded place to rest. "Proper pet care can significantly reduce the risk for heat stroke," said Dr. Donato.
Dr. Donato also advises pet owners to keep a close eye on their pets at all times. Never let a dog play outside in an unfenced area even if family members are nearby. A dog can easily become startled and dart into the street faster than a family member can react.
