LOS ANGELES, Aug. 12, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hollywood pet expert Dr. Jeff Werber has been featured on the Dr. Oz Show discussing how to add years to a dog's life through at-home gum disease prevention. Dr. Werber discussed the warning signs of gum disease, how to recognize symptoms and what pet owners can do to prevent gum disease. In addition, Dr. Werber is a regular contributor to KABC Talk Radio 790. Pet owners can call in Sunday mornings from 11:00am to 12:00pm with their pet care questions.
Veterinarian and pet expert Dr. Jeff Werber recently guest starred on the Dr. Oz Show, discussing how pet owners can add years to their dogs' lives.
"Four of five dogs over the age of three already have some degree of gum disease," said Dr. Werber. "Left untreated, gum disease can become a major health problem for dogs, leading to serious bacterial infections. Gum disease can lead to heart, kidney and liver disease."
According to Dr. Werber, regular brushing is the best way to prevent the build-up of plaque along the gum line. Without brushing, bacteria and food particles will sit along the gum line. Minerals in the saliva can harden the plaque, turning it into tartar, which can be difficult to remove. Tartar can put pressure on the gums, causing pockets in the gumline to form causing bacterial infections.
"Left unchecked, simple plaque build-up can progress to tartar problems, gingivitis and ultimately periodontal disease, a condition that is not reversible," said Dr. Werber.
The Hollywood vet recommends pet owners brush their pets' teeth once a week. Plaque control treats can also help break up plaque build-up along the gum line. Regular veterinary dental cleanings will also remove plaque and tartar.
"Cleaning dogs' teeth is an important part of regular dog care," said Dr. Werber. "Unfortunately, many pet owners do not feel comfortable brushing their pet's teeth. Our veterinary care team is always happy to sit down with pet owners and show them the proper brushing technique. We can also recommend plaque control treats to help reduce plaque build-up."
Dr. Werber also recommends annual wellness exams for pets. During this exam, the veterinarian checks for warning signs of illness by conducting diagnostic blood work and taking a fecal sample. The veterinary care team will also confirm that pets are up to date on all required vaccinations, including the rabies vaccination, which is a requirement by California state law.
Dr. Werber is a pet expert contributor to the KABC Talk Radio 790 program. He encourages pet owners to call in with any pet care questions on Sunday from 11:00am to noon.
