Noted Design Personalities Will Take Part in Presentations, Panels, and Book Signings
Over 30 Publishers and Booksellers Will Sell New, Backlist, and Rare Titles
NEW YORK, Sept. 13, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Designers and media celebrities such as Todd Oldham, Hal Rubenstein, Steven Heller, Michael Bierut, Paul Goldberger, and Tod Williams and Billy Tsien, will participate in the programming of the inaugural Designers & Books Fair, which takes place on the campus of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City on October 26-28.
The Fair is being orchestrated by Steve Kroeter, founder of the popular website DesignersandBooks.com, and is being staged by Stella Show Management Company, a firm whose other design shows in the New York City area include The Pier Antiques Show, Fashion Alley @ The Pier Show, and Antiques at the Armory.
"Our experience with the Designers & Books website has shown us that books are great sources of inspiration to those in the world of design—which we think of as architecture, fashion, graphic design, interior design, landscape architecture, product design, and urban design," says Kroeter. "One of the great things about New York is that it is not only home to perhaps the world's greatest concentration of design professionals—the City of New York says there are over 40,000—but also that it has such a large number of people interested in design books. This includes not only writers, book designers, editors, publishers, booksellers, book artisans, and critics—but also the general public, which these days is very design savvy. It occurred to us it would be great to bring all these people together. That's what the Fair is about."
The Fair begins the evening of Friday, October 26, with the keynote program,"Designing the Future of the Design Book" featuring Michael Bierut, Irma Boom, Massimo Vignelli, Lorraine Wild, and Barry Bergdoll—jointly presented with the Van Alen Institute. The next morning, the exhibition hall and signing areas open to the public at 10 a.m., with programming in two separate theaters at FIT beginning at 9:00 a.m. Among Saturday's ticketed programs are:
- Todd Oldham in Conversation with Wendy Goodman
- Style by the Book: Hal Rubenstein in Conversation with Valerie Steele
- Chinese Design Culture Now, featuring Eric Chan, Ming Wang, Xiangyang Xin, and Susan Szenasy
- Book Design at Pentagram, a panel featuring a number of the firm's designers and sponsored by the Design Observer Group
On Sunday, the exhibition hall again opens at 10:00 a.m., with the programming beginning at 11:00 a.m. Among the ticketed events taking place that day:
- Steven Heller and Louise Fili: A Conversation with Debbie Millman
- Tod Williams and Billie Tsien: A Conversation with Paul Goldberger
- How to Get Published in the World of Design Books, moderated by Steven Heller and featuring top executives from major publishing houses
Over the course of the weekend, book publishers will feature signings by authors in the exhibition hall and their sales booths, allowing the public to meet many of the leading members of the design community. Among the publishers exhibiting at the Fair will be Abbeville Press, Abrams Books, Lars Müller, The MIT Press, The Monacelli Press, W.W. Norton, Princeton Architectural Press, Rizzoli Bookstore, Thames & Hudson, and Yale University Press.
