MANHATTAN, Kan., Sept. 23, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With fall sports season well under way, Manhattan chiropractor Dr. Jarrod Nichols is raising awareness about the importance of chiropractic care for treating sports injuries. Dr. Nichols and fellow chiropractors Dr. Garett Roop and Dr. Samuel Beugelsdijk provide sports injury treatment for both adults and youth athletes. These treatments follow an evidenced-based, patient-centered approach, incorporating chiropractic adjustments with physical medicine to promote healing and naturally manage pain. Common fall sports injuries including knee pain, rotator cuff injuries, golf elbow and shin splints.
Manhattan chiropractor Dr. Jarrod Nichols is encouraging sports injury patients to seek prompt treatment following their injury. Prompt treatment can help prevent the build-up of scar tissue, which blocks the healing process and exacerbates pain.
"September and October are common months for sports injuries," said Dr. Nichols. "Whether it's a youth athlete who has sustained an injury on the football field or a competitive runner, it is important to seek treatment for these injuries as quickly as possible. The most effective treatments will combine natural pain relief with injury rehabilitation and internal healing."
According to Dr. Nichols, rotator cuff injuries are one of the most common fall sports injuries. Football quarterbacks tend to suffer pain due to a dislocation or torn rotator cuff. Additionally, sports with lots of stop and go running can cause shin splints or knee pain. Other injuries include back pain from a herniated disc and headaches caused by whiplash.
Depending on the type of injury, Dr. Nichols recommends a combination of chiropractic adjustments to restore spinal alignment and physical medicine to treat soft tissue injuries. One treatment that the chiropractors frequently use is Active Release Therapy (ART). This movement-based massage treatment helps target tension trapped deep within the muscle fascia.
"ART is extremely effective for soft tissue injury treatment and pain management," said Dr. Roop, who is a certified ART practitioner. "We frequently recommend this treatment for patients suffering from shin splints, knee pain and rotator cuff injuries. It is also effective for treating tennis and golf elbow."
Dr. Roop works with local high school athletic departments to treat youth athletes for sports injuries and reduce the risk for future injury. He also works with the Kansas State University track team.
Dr. Beugelsdijk is a certified Kinesio tape practitioner. Kinesio taping provides natural pain management for shoulder pain, neck pain and back pain.
"Kinesio taping helps manage extremity pain while allowing the body to safely be active," said Dr. Beugelsdijk. "After a sports injury, Kinesio taping prior to a big game or competitive race can protect the injured body part while it heals and still allow the individual to be active."
Nichols Chiropractic combines chiropractic adjustments and physical medicine for natural healing and pain management. The Manhattan, KS chiropractic center serves the Wamego, Junction City, Flint Hills and Ft. Riley communities.
