Police Fleet Quickly Converts to Clean Fuel Through Alliance AutoGas Program

MOBILE, Ala., Sept. 27, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- When the City of Mobile needed 30 law enforcement fleet vehicles switched to propane autogas, fast, Alliance AutoGas outfitted the police cruisers with bi-fuel conversion kits, installed a fueling station, trained the staff and had them back on the road, all in about three weeks. Alliance certified conversion center Force 911 converted the cruisers at a pace of about two vehicles a day, providing a seamless transition to clean fuel with a fast turnaround for the municipal fleet.

"The conversion of part of Mobile's fleet has been extremely positive and will serve as a benchmark to further our commitment to the environment and saving tax dollars," Mobile Mayor Sam Jones said. "Both are quite rewarding at a time when cities are faced with unprecedented financial challenges."

The City of Mobile has 60 autogas fleet vehicles total, including 30 public works vehicles also converted through Alliance AutoGas. City officials were first spurred to adopt an alternative fuel program after receiving an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant from the Department of Energy to deploy clean, affordable and reliable energy technology. Propane autogas fit the bill as a dependable, American-made clean fuel that significantly saves on fuel costs.

Autogas fleets currently save around $1.50 per gallon on fuel compared to gasoline.

"Saving taxpayer dollars is a big priority for the City of Mobile, and that was definitely a key factor in choosing propane autogas for our fleet," says City of Mobile Environmental Manager Ray Richardson. "Alliance AutoGas made launching our autogas fleet a very smooth and painless process. They were great to work with—if we needed information, our Alliance contact was right there, right away. Alliance guided us through every step and also taught our staff to operate the new autogas vehicles, providing safety training for 40-50 city employees."

Propane autogas is the most widely used alternative fuel in the world, powering 18 million vehicles globally, but only a fraction of those are in America. Mark Denton, vice president of business development for Alliance AutoGas, say that many U.S. fleets simply aren't aware how easy and quickly they can switch to this domestic clean fuel.

"Alliance AutoGas helps communities like Mobile save thousands on fuel costs and improve local air quality," says Denton. "With financing from Alliance that enables fleets to switch to propane autogas at no upfront cost, plus the $1.50 per gallon fuel cost savings, it simply doesn't make sense for fleets to continue paying exorbitant gasoline prices."
