Palm Harbor Veterinarian Announces 10% Animal Dental Care Discount for September

PALM HARBOR, Fla., Sept. 27, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Animal & Bird Medical Center of Palm Harbor in Palm Harbor, FL announced that September is "animal dental care month" at the animal hospital. Veterinarian Dr. Joel Murphy is raising awareness about the importance of regular animal dental care. In order to encourage pet dental exams, the animal hospital is offering a 10% discount on all dental services during the month of September. The center provides service for pets in the Clearwater, Dunedin, Oldsmar, Ozona and Tarpon Springs communities.

September is Animal Dental Care month at the Animal & Bird Medical Center of Palm Harbor. Pet owners receive a 10% discount on all pet dental services scheduled during the month.

"Regular dental care is extremely important for protecting a pet's overall well-being," said Palm Harbor veterinarian Dr. Joel Murphy. "The majority of pets over three years of age already suffer from periodontal disease. We are working to change this."

Periodontal disease is a gum disease caused by bacteria and plaque buildup. The disease creates pockets in the gum line that are susceptible to bacterial infections. Gums also become inflamed and swollen, making it painful for pets to eat food, drink water and chew on toys.

Periodontal disease is widespread among pets older than three years with many going diagnosed or not receiving treatment. Regular pet dental cleanings help prevent bacteria from building up along the gum line and hardening into plaque. However, according to Dr. Murphy, many pet owners do not have their pets' teeth professionally cleaned because they simply do not understand the dangers of periodontal disease.

"Our animal hospital is working to educate pet owners about the importance of annual dental cleanings for dogs and cats," said Dr. Murphy. "Since pets are unable to brush their own teeth, food particles naturally build up after every meal. While dental chews can help make a difference, the best way to stop periodontal disease is through a combination of at-home care and in-office treatments."

Periodontal disease increases the risk for bacterial infections and tooth loss. If a bacterial infection enters the bloodstream, it may cause damage to the heart, liver, kidneys and other internal organs.

During a professional cleaning, Dr. Murphy and his vet care team will scrape away plaque from the gum line and polish teeth. Polishing teeth helps resist future bacterial build up. The Palm Harbor veterinarian also recommends weekly at-home brushing sessions.

"Regularly brushing a pet's teeth helps to prevent gum disease," said Dr. Murphy. "Plus, regular brushing keeps a pet's breath fresh."

Animal & Bird Medical Center of Palm Harbor provides wellness care for companion animals, pocket pets, reptiles, small mammals and birds. They will be running their dental care discount throughout the month of September.
