FAIRFIELD, NJ--(Marketwire - Oct 2, 2012) - Dr. Jerry Strauss, a cosmetic dentist in New Jersey, says dental phobia is a common concern amongst patients at his practice, and more patients have been requesting advanced techniques designed to alleviate their anxiety. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates in a recent survey that less than 62 percent of American adults between the ages of 18 and 64 visited the dentist last year. However, thanks to the latest developments in sedation dentistry, Dr. Strauss says his office has been able to improve the dental experience of patients and allow them a chance to feel comfortable and relaxed inside a dental office.
At his New Jersey cosmetic dentistry practice, Dr. Strauss says he sees a number of patients each day who are made uneasy by the sounds and smells of a dentist's office. He says many have been hurt previously or have a history of bad experiences that cause them to go into a panic attack at the thought of undergoing treatment. In an effort to create a more relaxing environment for his patients, Dr. Strauss says he has incorporated oral conscious sedation techniques for performing a variety of procedures ranging from root canals and oral surgery to conventional dentistry and porcelain veneers.
"Sedation dentistry allows people who would normally never step into a dental office to get the work done that they need," says Dr. Strauss. "Patients are comfortable, they are sedated, and then they wake up and it's done."
With oral conscious sedation, Dr. Strauss says the patient is given a small pill to take one hour before their appointment that will cause them to be very drowsy by the time they get to the office. Also providing a blanket, headphones, and a neck pillow, he says his office then takes every measure to ensure patients are relaxed so their treatment will be comfortable and worry-free. Trained assistants monitor the patient's vital signs using a pulse oximeter while Dr. Strauss performs the procedure. While the main benefits are easing patients' fears and helping them get the treatment they need, Dr. Strauss says an added bonus is that he is able to perform the patient's procedures more efficiently and effectively.
"When patients are sedated, I can get a lot more done in one visit," he says. "It gives me the ability to work efficiently and to make sure their treatment is performed properly."
Regardless of which procedure patients are looking for, Dr. Strauss says oral conscious sedation dentistry provides dentists the ability to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their treatment. However, because of the complexity and necessary experience, he urges patients to only consult with qualified dentists with the proper training in sedation techniques before undergoing any treatment.
