LEXINGTON, MA--(Marketwire - Jan 22, 2013) - Tokutek, the leader in high-performance and agile database storage engines, today announced that the University of Montreal's Philip Awadalla Laboratory has deployed its TokuDB database storage engine to optimize the lab's medical and population genomics research database. With TokuDB, the lab's MySQL database can quickly ingest hundreds of thousands of records every day and quickly retrieve data in response to a diverse set of research requests.
The lab's genomic research database is following 1400 individuals with 3.7 million shared mutations, which means it is tracking 5.3 billion mutations. However, as the database grew to 200 GB, its performance plummeted. Thibault de Malliard, the researcher tasked with managing the lab's data, selected Tokutek's TokuDB because it is a high-performance MySQL storage engine that can support his database, which could grow to 500 GB or even 1 TB within the next year.
"Data management is very important for the genomic research lab. The researchers make a lot of queries, and they want their data at their fingertips. To find the rare record or line, which has not been seen in another DB in the world, can mean the discovery of a new mutation or a gene marker that causes a disease," noted de Malliard. "With epidemiology data, we are searching to find some state for people who have an issue by comparing a subset of people vs. all the other people. TokuDB uniquely enables us to advance this research."
TokuDB continues to be the ideal choice for complex high-volume applications that require fast response time and that must simultaneously store and query large volumes of rapidly arriving data. These include social networking applications, cloud enablement platforms, machine data and logfile processing, and eCommerce Personalization. TokuDB is fully compatible with MySQL and MariaDB.

About MySQL
MySQL is the most popular open source database software in the world. Many of the world's largest and fastest-growing organizations use MySQL to save time and money powering their high-volume Web sites, critical business systems, communications networks, and commercial software. MySQL is owned by Oracle, the world's largest business software company.
About MariaDB
MariaDB strives to be the logical choice for database professionals looking for a robust, scalable, and reliable RDBMS (Relational Database Management System). MariaDB can be deployed as a drop-in replacement for the popular MySQL database and it is built by the original MySQL architects and most of the original core developers of MySQL with assistance from the broader community of Free and open source software developers. In addition to the core functionality of MySQL, MariaDB offers a rich set of feature enhancements including alternate storage engines, server optimizations, and security and performance patches. More information on MariaDB is available at http://mariadb.org and http://kb.askmonty.org.
