CHICAGO, Feb. 19, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pathways.org, an organization dedicated to raising awareness of early sensory, communication, and motor delays in children, has taken a major step in educating health professionals about recognizing early developmental issues among infants as early as two months of age. This past fall, the organization distributed more than 200 of its turnkey, educational course "2, 4, 6 Month Motor – Course to Go" to health educators around the world.
The Pathways.org "2, 4, 6 Month Motor – Course to Go" is loaded on a silicone USB flashdrive and contains PowerPoint presentations, scripts, videos, outlines, and handouts on topics key to identifying early motor delays. The course explains who Pathways.org is, the importance of early detection and early intervention of a motor delay, parent/doctor communication, and resources for referring children for further screening. The most impressive feature of the course is the video comparisons of typical and atypical motor development between two children at two, four, and six months of age.
"Pediatric healthcare providers in training get to see many pamphlets and booklets and read chapters about early development, but they rarely get to see clearly defined differences between children of the exact same age trying to accomplish the same task", stated Michael N. Nelson, PhD, Director of the Section of Pediatric Psychology at Rush Children's Hospital and member of the Pathways.org Medical Round Table.
The course stems from a continuing education course developed by Pathways.org in conjunction with the American Academy of Pediatrics entitled Recognizing Early Motor Delays at the Two Month Baby Visit. Pathways.org presented video content from the course to residency, pediatric nurse practitioner, and physician assistant programs around Chicago. Positive responses from the presentations, CME course, and "2 Month Motor" pilot program prompted Pathways.org to expand course materials and create the "2, 4, 6 Month Motor – Course to Go".
