SEATTLE, March 17, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- John W. Killip, D.D.S., was awarded the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes significant contributions to ADEA and its members through teaching, research, and service. The award was presented to Dr. Killip during the 2013 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition, being held March 16-19, in Seattle.
Dr. Killip has been a long-time leader in dental education and an advocate for strengthening effective teaching. In December 2012, he concluded a 40-year career at the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Dentistry, where he currently holds the academic rank of Clinical Professor Emeritus. His many honors include the 2009 ADEA Presidential Citation, the ADEA/William J. Gies Foundation Educational Fellowship in 2000-2001, the 1990 and 1998 Student Council Distinguished Teaching Service Award, and Most Influential Teacher in 1993 at the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Dentistry.
In addition to his leadership role at the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Dentistry, Dr. Killip has been an important leader in ADEA. He served as Vice President for Faculties on the ADEA Board of Directors from 2005 to 2007, on the ADEAGies Foundation Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2009, as a member of the ADEA Minority Affairs Advisory Committee from 2007 to 2008, and on the Journal of Dental Education Editorial Review Board from 2007 to 2010. Drawing upon his extensive experience with faculty development and leadership programs, Dr. Killip developed many programs that are now an integral part of ADEA, including the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Special Interest Group, a peer based discussion forum and information exchange.

Dr. Killip served from 1968-1970 in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. He maintained a general dentistry private practice in Kansas City from 1971-1987. Dr. Killip first joined the faculty at the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Dentistry as an Assistant Clinical Professor in 1973. During his tenure he served as a Clinical Associate Professor, a Clinical Professor of Restorative Dentistry, and the Associate Dean for Student Programs. Dr. Killip earned his B.S. from Northern Arizona University in 1964 and his D.D.S. from University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Dentistry in 1968.
