WEST GREENWICH, R.I., April 7, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With pet obesity on the rise, pet owners are increasingly turning to West Greenwich pet care services like nutrition counseling to help their pets stay healthy. According to veterinarian Dr. Ralph Pratt, the clinic's weight management program is a safe way to help pets lose weight and reduce the risk for illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. Dr. Pratt and his wife, Dr. Amy Pratt, DVM are working to educate pet owners about the dangers of pet obesity and the best ways to help pets lose weight. The animal hospital's dietary management program provides nutrition counseling for sustainable weight loss.
West Greenwich Animal Hospital is educating pet owners about the dangers of pet obesity and how they can fight back against this growing problem.
"More than half of all pets are overweight or obese," said Dr. Pratt. "Even worse, nearly half of all pet owners believe their pets are a healthy weight – despite the fact that they are overweight or obese."
Dr. Pratt stressed that many pet owners simply do not know how to recognize the signs of weight problems in pets. A few extra pounds on a human may be completely fine, but on a pet, those extra pounds can significantly increase the risk for heart disease, obesity and other weight-related problems.
"We know how much owners care about their pets, and we're working to educate them about the dangers of obesity and the importance of weight management," said Dr. Pratt. "By raising awareness about pet obesity, we are helping more pet owners understand the importance of weight management."
Dr. Pratt says that a combination of overfeeding, high-calorie pet treats, and a lack of exercise directly contribute to pet weight problems.
"Pet owners are conditioned to use treats as a reward for good behavior," said Dr. Pratt. "Unfortunately, it's easy to give a pet too many treats and too much food. Feeding guidelines on the back of pet foods do not always match up with a pet's dietary needs."
Dr. Pratt provides nutrition counseling and weight management as part of his clinic's West Greenwich pet care services. These services are designed to educate pet owners about the best ways to help their pets safely lose weight and adopt a more active lifestyle.
"Losing weight may not happen overnight, but with dietary management and more exercise, it is possible," said Dr. Pratt.
The animal hospital's weight management program stresses the importance of portion control and balanced nutrition. Dr. Pratt advises pet owners to limit treats to special occasions.
Dr. Pratt also provides nutrition counseling for pets with food allergies or intolerances.
"Our goal is to create a dietary plan that matches a pet's specific wellness needs," said Dr. Pratt.
In addition to pet dietary management, the pet clinic offers comprehensive vet care, including vaccinations, dental care and surgery.
