JACKSON HOLE, WY--(Marketwired - May 14, 2013) - In a year which saw a modest 3.7% decline in Air Taxi operations according to data from the FAA, midsize and larger private charter jets retained their popularity while moderate air charter buyers made a move to more economical aircraft in general.
In 2012 Light Jets descended 8% while Turboprops climbed 6% and Piston Twins moved up 5% as a percent of total in year-over-year popularity. Midsize Jets lost only 1% while Super Midsize and Heavy Jets maintained altitude compared to 2011.
Light Jets were 41% of all private air charters in 2012. The top three most popular were:
1. Beechjet 400/Hawker 400XP - 24% of Light Jet charters
2. Citation V/Ultra - 14%
3. Learjet 35A - 12%
Midsize Jets were 20% of all private air charters in 2012. By popularity the most popular were:
1. Hawker 800/800XP/700 - 53% of Midsize Jet charters
2. Citation Excel/III - 21%
3. Learjet 60/55 - 20%
Executive Turboprops were 29% of all private air charters in 2012. The most chosen were:
1. King Air B200/200/100 - 55% of Turboprop charters
2. King Air C90/90 - 13%
3. Pilatus PC-12 - 9%

Year over year, the overall private air charter market trend is fairly clear; Moderate charter buyers are moving toward more economical aircraft, more specifically from light jets to turboprops and from turboprops to twin piston aircraft. Heavy Jets and Midsize Jets remained steady in demand, with heavies maintaining year-to-year and Midsize Jet charters declining by only 1%.
