Enea launches 64-bit real-time operating system for exploding networking traffic requirements

Enea OSE 64-bit available now
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 17, 2013 – Enea® (NASDAQ OMX Nordic: ENEA) today
announced the 64-bit version of the Enea OSE real-time operating system (RTOS).

The 64-bit edition of Enea OSE now meets the need for increased buffering
capabilities due to vastly increased IP traffic in today’s telecom and network
equipment. The buffering is especially caused by user and control plane IP
transport termination, but also in various use cases within IP networking and
practically renders the 4GB of virtual memory space insufficient. Adding 64-bit
support to Enea OSE allows customers to break this barrier and buffer as much
data as necessary for their systems.

“With 64-bit support, the HW buffer handling of Enea OSE delivers a future proof
solution to tomorrow’s networking requirements”, said Markus Malmgren, director
of products, Enea. “This is done by allowing the creation of global signal
pools, which can be shared by several applications and thereby removing the need
to copy signals between the memory domains of the different applications. It is
also possible to create large data areas for the heap, allowing the 64-bit
application to store large amounts of information. This is particularly
interesting for database like applications.”

To be as relevant and as applicable as possible for networking requirements,
Enea will evolve its 64-bit support beyond the current Freescale® QorIQ® T4240
(with e6500 Power Architecture® cores) and P50xx (with e6500 Power Architecture®
cores) System-on-Chip (SoC) architectures, to a variety of HW architectures.
Enea will also continue to be ARM® friendly and make sure to support the ARMv8
architecture with 64-bit operating capability, as a long term goal.

“We are pleased to work with ENEA to bring high-performance, value-add solutions
to our customers,” said Nikolay Guenov, QorIQ marketing director with
Freescale’s Digital Networking business. “Enea’s networking solutions provide a
rich suite of technologies that help our customers differentiate and win in
competitive markets.”

The 64-bit version of the Enea OSE RTOS supports Freescale’s 64-bit QorIQ
communications processors, including the industry-leading performance of the
QorIQ T4240 device. The QorIQ T4240 SoC features 24 virtual cores, 28-nm process
technology and delivers a compelling combination of hardware acceleration,
fabric-based interconnect technology, high speed I/O, hardware-assisted
virtualization and 64-bit Power Architecture® cores. The 64-bit version of the
Enea OSE RTOS also supports Freescale’s QorIQ P5040 and QorIQ P5020 multicore
processors, which target 64-bit control plane applications requiring core
frequencies above 2 GHz.
