COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwired - Jul 24, 2013) - Remembering all the complex passwords we need to perform the most basic tasks throughout the day can be a maddening, frustrating challenge. And guarding personal data becomes more difficult each day as computers are vulnerable to increasingly sophisticated hacking.
This week, Battelle released SignWave Unlock, a new app for the Leap Motion™ 3D motion control device that allows users to interact with computers in real, natural ways. Battelle's SignWave Unlock, for the first time makes advanced biometric security technology available to the masses via the inexpensive, readily available Leap Motion Controller.
Among the many apps available in the Airspace™ Store, Battelle SignWave Unlock demonstrates the true potential of the device as revolutionary. With a simple wave of your hand in front of the Leap Motion Controller, the app verifies your identity and unlocks your computer. Programmers from Battelle Cyber Innovations developed the software that works by measuring the geometry of the user's hand.
"Battelle SignWave Unlock is able to identify the unique characteristics of your hand to build a biometric profile, so your hand becomes the password that can unlock your computer," said Nicholas Vidovich, Technical Development Lead for the software.
Accuracy, speed and reliability are high because the Leap Motion technology analyzes 3D data at a very high speed.
Future applications for Battelle SignWave Unlock could include anything from use in surgical suites where non-contact motion detection could prevent the spread of infection, to use by military troops who may need speedy access to security facilities in rugged environments.
The Leap Motion Controller lets users pinch, grab and move objects by naturally moving their hands over the controller. The $79.99 device launched July 22 and will be available at Best Buy outlets across the U.S. on July 28.
"These are exciting times for the Cyber Innovations business as this app represents the first of a number of innovative products that will be launched in the months ahead," said Lisa McCauley, General Manager of Battelle's Cyber Innovations business.
Battelle was part of the early developer program for Leap Motion, and the Battelle SignWave Unlock app was selected as one of the first 75 available in Airspace.
